Search Engine Optimization Portfolio       1     Page 2

This page is some SEO work carried out on one of my own sites, built for a customer in Bristol several years ago.

We are up against stiff competition in Bristol for terms like "Student Accommodation in Bristol" or "Property Lets to Students", because of the sheer number of other sites, private landlords and the Universities offering their own sites and accommodation. Whilst we were having great success, there were always one or two sites that wiped the floor with us.

After making a detailed analysis of these sites, it was obvious that we were playing a game of catch up.

At least one of these sites had over 200 pages. Others had 92, 106, 75 pages. Anthony James had a humble 20.

We are NOT in a niche market. There is lots of competition for this business and internet audience, and our competition has chosen volume as the way to beat everyone else.

The fact that we were actually just behind any of them was a bloody miracle, when you look at the kinds of volume we're trying to compete with. I felt like a mini chasing a jaguar.

However, the fact remained we were consistently just behind the others. If they took 1, 2 and 3, we were at 4. This told me that I was a fifth of their size, but hot on their tail. Which also meant, the SEO work on Anthony James's pages was actually giving us a big push up the Search Engine page results, even if our small size was letting us down.

I was given the go ahead to increase our internet presence with some volume and this gave me the opportunity to showcase the Multiple Occupancy Student Properties of Anthony James, and the managed privately owned houses, with some real, valuable and visitor friendly content. We put up an additional 60 pages of properties, with photographs and descriptions. Each page had a little SEO magic and the whole lot resubmitted to the Search Engines and directories for re-indexing.

We had to wait for the Google Dance for about a week or so, but once that happened, I knew we'd start getting our own back.   :-)

Update 1: It is now a whole month since this work was done and uploaded, and I've just recently been making checks on traffic flows. They show that last years visitor numbers have been consistent and even, when compared to this years for the same days and months. Whilst prior to the Search Engine Optimization work being done to the site, there was a small but progressive increase in visitor numbers over the year, because of earlier additional pages, from the time this phase of the SEO work and subsequent Search Engine indexing took place, the traffic increase in reported Unique Visitors has been a sustained 35%.
The search results show, this is a direct result of the new pages. This is shown because these are the pages that the searchers are landing on.

The site owner's comments following the latest additions:

Dear Phil,
Thanks so much for making the changes, everyone thinks it looks very good.
Have you sent in a bill yet? If not please do so.
Thanks again for all your good work.
All the best
A.R.

Update 2: The latest figures show that site visitor numbers are already well over 55% higher than the averages before the changes. These are Unique Visitor numbers.
By the time all the dust settles, I wouldn't be surprised if we double our traffic.

The site owner was delighted with this news, here are his comments:

Dear Phil,
What you have achieved is truly impressive. I can see the increased traffic from the counter site and the fact that whatever relevant search terms you type into Google we come on the first page, sometimes twice and often above our serious competition.
Well done.
All the best
A.R.

Please note: I have changed the signature at the bottom to initials to preserve my clients identity. The originals are on file.

Update 3: The latest figures show that the site, as of 22 January 2006, has improved again on previous visitors and now boasts an increase in traffic numbers of 300% more than the average before the changes were made. These increases have also boosted numbers to an average of 1,100 page views per day, or 7,500 page views per week.
